Sillana the mighty castle stands on a rocky hill 530 meters above sea level in a position to dominate a vast territory comprising the provinces of Siena, Pisa and Grosseto. The site has always been strategically important to control the Cecina River valley and the valleys surrounding children, so that the legend wants to date the origin of the fort in Roman times. Historical records have come to us make us think that the fortress was built in a much less ancient times: the tower and the inside of the fence should go back to 1200 ca. while the outer perimeter bastion, carried out as reinforcement of existing curtain walls can be dated with certainty to the middle of 1400. Before reaching the real fortress meet the first defense raised about thirty feet below, today in the woods. These consisted of a fortified gate with an attached tower, both in brick structures built to defend the road leading under the walls of the main fort. From this outpost a few traces remain today. Once at the top of the hill we are at the foot of the massive ramparts of the fortress walls. The only entrance is a postern on the north-east and was originally defended by a barbican species almost completely disappeared. This entry resigned we understand that the functions of the fort were mainly military housing without providing for a constable, or lord. Internally, the show presents is very different: the yard is overgrown and the floor is considerably higher because of the debris deposited. Only thanks to recent restoration work still in progress, some are coming to light interiors, for surely the time for storage and accommodation for the garrison. Once up on the ramparts, taking care since the rail is gone and the area is very windy, we can easily understand the strategic importance of the position and enjoy a wonderful view: on a clear day the views sweep down to the sea. |
